Behaviour, Attendance & Welfare

Welcome to The Gatwick School's behaviour page, where our unwavering commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment is deeply rooted in our core values: Choices, Chances, and Culture.

At The Gatwick School, we recognise that exemplary behaviour is not only crucial for academic success but is also a testament to our dedication to instilling these values in every aspect of our students' lives to ensure their success beyond school.

We believe that expected behaviours must be explicitly taught and this is an imbedded practice every day at TGS. These are outlined in our behaviour curriculum and link with our Rights Respecting ethos. We praise, reward, remind and reteach to nurture the personal development of all students in our care.

Within the realm of Choices, we empower our students to make decisions that contribute positively to their personal development and academic achievements. Our students are encouraged to make positive choices, creating a culture of responsibility and self-discipline. Through a comprehensive behaviour policy, we guide our students to understand the impact of their choices on themselves and the community, promoting a sense of accountability that aligns seamlessly with our values.

Chances are viewed as opportunities for growth and development at The Gatwick School. We believe in second chances and provide a supportive framework for students to learn from their experiences. Our dedicated team of educators, including our Pastoral Support, engages in a restorative approach to behaviour management, emphasising personal responsibility, empathy, and the chance for accomplishment.

When students make positive choices, we create chances for them to be acknowledged and rewarded.

By doing so, we create an environment where poor choices are viewed as opportunities for learning and improvement and expected behaviours are reinforced, reflecting our commitment to both Choices and Chances.

Our dedication to Culture goes beyond the classroom, shaping a school environment that values mutual respect, inclusivity, and a strong sense of community – two small schools, one big family. Through the celebration of achievements and demonstrating expected behaviours, we cultivate a culture that promotes mutual recognition and high standards. This culture is best encapsulated in our school-wide acknowledgement system: Gatwick Gamechangers. In the eyes of our pupils, being a Gatwick Gamechanger means:

  • To respect and act upon the school values, make correct choices, take chances, and create a positive culture in the school.
  • To try your hardest in everything you do, to keep up to school standards and to be kind and respectful to others and their beliefs.
  • A Gatwick Gamechanger is a person who represents the school values: Chances, Choices & Culture - the best. It means helping people get to classes, being polite, following rules, being friendly and getting on with schoolwork quickly and efficiently. A person who is just generally good.

At The Gatwick School, the integration of Choices, Chances, and Culture is at the heart of our behaviour management framework. We actively involve parents and carers in fostering these values, creating a collaborative partnership that extends beyond the school. Together, we shape responsible, respectful, and resilient individuals who embody our values and are poised to make a positive impact on the world.

Attendance

Welcome to The Gatwick School's Attendance page, where we prioritise every student's presence in lessons and school, every day, as a fundamental aspect of their educational journey. Committed to meeting the needs of our students, we uphold the highest standards to ensure a positive and enriching learning environment. Our whole school target for attendance for every child is 95% or higher.

At The Gatwick School, we believe in empowering our students through the values of Choices, Chances, and Culture. We recognise that each day presents an opportunity for growth, and regular attendance is the key to unlocking the full potential within every child. By fostering a culture of responsibility and engagement, we strive to instil a sense of ownership in our students, encouraging them to make informed Choices that positively impact their educational trajectory.

Our dedicated staff is passionate about providing Chances for success, and regular attendance is a crucial element in seizing these opportunities. We understand that every day missed represents a missed opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to our vibrant school community.

Our Attendance and Pastoral Support teams work together with the wider staff to ensure students are supported to attend regularly.

Embracing a diverse and inclusive Culture, we celebrate the unique talents and perspectives each student brings to our school. Regular attendance not only enhances individual learning but also contributes to the collective experience, fostering a sense of belonging and unity among our students. It is for these reasons that we work tirelessly with parents and carers to ensure students attend school all day, every day.

On this page, you will find essential information and resources related to attendance, including policies, reporting procedures, and support services. Together, let us work towards a future where every student at The Gatwick School can make the most of their educational journey through consistent attendance, Choices that lead to success, and a shared Culture of excellence.

Lateness

Secondary Phase:

Late marks are given if Secondary students arrive after 9:00am. At this point students should make their way to Tutor Time via Secondary Reception. Pupils should arrive at school and line up around the school building by 8:45am. The school gate opens for line-ups at 8:45am each day.

A missed bus. Lost keys. The car won't start. Most people will have experienced being late for school or work or even a social engagement. Whilst it is accepted that everyone will be late occasionally, persistent lateness in a school can have a huge effect. The individual who is late will miss important information and may find it more difficult to catch up in lessons. It is not always just the individual that is affected but also the class that is disrupted on arrival of late students.

Please support us by getting your child to school on time.

Lessons

Lessons start at 9:25am. Students must be outside their classoom room, ready to enter the classroom for 9:25am start.

When students miss the beginning of lessons, they may become frustrated because they are unclear as to the purpose of the lesson or may miss essential information such as homework.

Teachers must stop teaching the whole class and turn their attention to the late individual to repeat the lesson objectives or other information that has been missed.

Teachers must do their registers at the beginning of lessons during the Recap & Retrieval activity so that learning can be uninterrupted.

If students are late the teacher must re-open the electronic register to add the student's mark. This takes attention away from teaching the whole class.

If more than one student is late the teacher may have to repeat the objectives and re-do the register more than once. Each time this happens it causes disruption to the whole class.
